We all have our favourite shows from when we were kids, and now, as bigger kids. Luckily I was young in the nineties, a golden era of entertainment, and grew up watching “Trouble” channel and Nickelodeon. I don’t watch a huge amount of the box today but below is a random (mostly American) list of characters that have stuck with me through the years and will always have a special place in my heart.
1 – Ross Geller (Friends)
I don’t think anyone has made me laugh so much in my entire life than Ross. Funnily enough it wasn’t until the late 90′s where I really noticed him, as he was often overlooked by the more “Obviously funny” Chandler and Joey. With Ross, you either loved him or hated him. His sarcastic quips, over the top reactions, and dedication to finding true love despite three divorces all provided some brilliant comedic moments that are still enjoyed today. To see Ross at his best just watch the “tanning” episode or the one where Rachel and Joey start dating (also in the picture above). L is for…….
2 – Charlie Runkle (Californication)
Californication isn’t particularly well-known in the UK but in my opinion it’s one of the best TV shows ever aired. A big reason for that is the seedy exploits of Hank Moody’s hapless agent Charlie Runkle. Although not the main pussy magnet, Charlie has managed to somehow get his fair share of tail off the back of Hank’s successes and failures. However he has also had to deal with getting a blowjob off a transvestite, not finding out until it was too late, catching his beloved wife Marcy having sex with a huge black guy who he thought was attacking her, and getting beaten up for pretending he was gay to secure a client. Charlie is a true legend of a man.
3. Kenan & Kel (Kenan & Kel)
The happiest times of my life were coming home from school, chucking my bag down, and switching on Nickelodeon to watch these guys. Kenan & Kel was the blueprint for simple, yet genuinely funny comedy, suitable for all ages. Whether it was Kenan’s ridiculous ideas or Kel’s execution of those ideas, it all made for a hilarious half hour of TV. Backing them up was Kenan’s family who were mostly oblivious to the trouble Kenan got himself into but provided great support for the two main protagonists. In the last few months I’ve been watching episodes on YouTube and I’m not embarrassed to admit that it still makes me giggle as much as it ever did.
4. Bogdan Drazic (Heartbreak High)
Never have I ever wanted to be anyone more than I wanted to be Draz from Heartbreak High. I used to dream of being as cool as he was and not giving a fuck about rules, a part of me still does. Draz was an interesting and complex character. I even bought my first pair of Inline Rollerblades because of the man, and yes, I rocked an eyebrow piercing for a year or two. Unfortunately for me, being a bad ass never came naturally as I grew up and I turned into the goody-goody I am now. But Draz will always be an awesome version of what a true bad boy should be. Maybe I should get a piercing and try again?
5. Sandy Cohen (The OC)
What can you say about one of the greatest TV dads of all time? If I ever become a father the first thing I’ll do when I need guidance will be to ask myself “What would Sandy do?” That’s the kind of admiration I have for him. fiercely loyal to his family, a committed public defender and lawyer, and a friend to the next generation, Sandy set a new benchmark for what a man should be. The best thing about him was that he wasn’t perfect, he made mistakes too, but he always found a way to fix them. I just wish there were real life versions of Sandy because the world would be a better place. The only negative thing I can say about him is that I’ve had an unhealthy addiction to bagels and filtered coffee since 2003….but it’s totally worth it.
6. Zack Morris (Saved By The Bell)
Ahh Zack Morris. What a lad he was. If I could have manipulated my school principal half as good as he did I would have had a much better time at St Johns. Although he was frequently shown to get poor grades and being somewhat of a misfit, Zack was actually very clever in the way he plotted and schemed his way through the “Bayside” years. It helped a lot that Mr Belding, the Principle, was as useful as an inflatable dart board. Zack became a legend amongst viewers because of his ability to score with the prettiest girls, none more so than the love of his life Kelly Kapowski. I’ve had many a wet dream about her.
7. Jess Day (New Girl)
Jess is basically every guys dream woman. Easy on the eye, quirky, funny, and doesn’t take herself too seriously. She also likes to hang with dudes that are spontaneous, silly, and downright ridiculous. Instead of frowning upon them and judging their exploits, Jess embraces the weirdness. With her you feel like no matter what you do or what you look like, you would have a fair chance of pulling her if you saw her on a night out. All together now fellas…..WHY CAN’T SHE BE REAL?!! She also is the only girl to make my list. I can’t think of another that comes anywhere near her.
8. John Locke (LOST)
What an inspiring man John Locke was. Whenever I watched LOST it was always episodes that centered around John that got me weepy, particularly where he was trying to win his father’s affection, even into his 50′s. Just goes to show that we never stop wanting our parents approval no matter how old we get. When John realised he could use his legs again on the magical Island, he didn’t need an invitation to explore and do everything he could to make the most of the newfound opportunity. Plus, he was his own man through and through. Fearless, courageous, and bold beyond measure, John Locke easily makes my list.
9. Will Smith (Fresh Prince Of Bellair)
I’ve never met a human being who didn’t like The Fresh Prince Of Bellair. It was quite difficult to choose between Will, Carlton, or Uncle Phil for who made the list but I went for Will because he’s most like myself, a bit of a clown, a loveable loser, but is actually intelligent and just trying to figure out his path. I’ll never forget the scene where Will is asking Uncle Phill why his biological father doesn’t want him, makes me cry every time.
10. Del Boy (Only Fools And Horses)
As you may have guessed I haven’t really seen a lot of British Television over the years. I don’t know why but I’ve always prefered shows from across the pond. However I’m proud to say that Del Boy is the token Brit on my list. I don’t think there has been a character in history more lovable than Del. He was and always will be a champion of the working class people, grafting and ducking and diving his way through life. His positively and work ethic inspired millions to keep fighting the good fight no matter how bad their situation. What more reasons do you need?
